Webinars for interpreter continuing education

After years of teaching onsite and offering workshops at national and international conferences, I am now developing webinars for US-based nationally certified healthcare and medical interpreters to maintain their continuing education credits. Webinars are an excellent way to learn more about a topic without being tied to the location or time zone of the trainer. Offered online, live, and as recordings, these webinars will help certified interpreters maintain the skills and knowledge to continue performing at their highest levels. Unless otherwise noted, webinars are provided in English and intended for all certified interpreters, regardless of language pair.

Jot It Down! Note-taking for Medical Interpreters

This 3-hour workshop ONLINE focuses on notetaking theory and practice for medical interpreters. We will start with the basics and move beyond to help interpreters begin to develop their own system that fits their context and needs. Participants will become familiar with the principles of notetaking and learn about helpful symbols for the healthcare context. Next, we will work on applying this knowledge through exercises and guided work. Interpreters will work on developing a list of their own symbols and abbreviations, as well as an overall notetaking strategy. Finally, we will practice in small groups and in front of all with healthcare-based dialogues. Before the end of the workshop, all participants will prepare a plan for further practice and study.

(This webinar will not be available as a recording afterward, so make sure you attend it live!)

Life After Certification: How to Renew Your Credential as a CMI, CHI, or CoreCHI

This free 25-minute webinar was live-hosted on Thursday, October 1st, 2015, and covered the nuts and bolts of renewing your credential as a nationally certified healthcare or medical interpreter. I explained the details of the continuing education requirements for both the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI) and the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters, for certified interpreters (CMI, CHI, and CoreCHI). I presented the process and key requirements for maintaining one’s credentials, and compared the two in a chart. Details such as required documentation, how and when to submit it, types of acceptable training, and ideas on where to find continuing education were included.
